Arizona long-term care system (ALTCS)
What is ALTCS?
ALTCS is Arizona’s long-term care program under AHCCCS (Medicaid). It helps eligible individuals who need a “nursing home level of care” by covering services that go beyond what typical insurance provides. Depending on the situation, ALTCS can authorize and pay for care in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living community, rehabilitation center, residential care home, or even in the person’s own home. It is a needs-based program that allows individuals to access the additional support and daily care they require.
What does altcs offer?
ALTCS is a managed care program that, once someone is medically and financially approved, allows the state to coordinate and cover long-term care services that standard insurance does not. In addition to supporting the cost of skilled nursing and nursing home care, ALTCS can also authorize certain in-home services such as personal care, therapies, home health, and respite.
The program is designed to ensure individuals receive the level of care they need—whether that’s in a licensed facility or safely at home. For many families, ALTCS provides reassurance by offering a structured, affordable path to long-term care when it becomes necessary.
